Cotton – always good
Most duvet covers are made of cotton because of the firm quality. Cotton is a 100% natural material and is made from the fluff of the cotton plant. Due to the high production numbers of cotton duvet covers, the costs are relatively low. If you have a smaller budget, then cotton is a good option. Cotton feels fresh and soft, breathes and absorbs well, is strong and reasonably non-iron and washable at high temperatures.
Cotton is also a very good choice with the warm summer nights ahead.
Percale cotton (percaline cotton) - for the soft look & feel
Do you want an air-permeable fabric with a luxurious look? Then a duvet cover made of cotton percale is a good choice. This fabric consists of 100% cotton and therefore benefits from all the fine properties of this material. Cotton percale is distinguished by the very tightly woven yarn. This gives the duvet cover a soft look & feel and a luxurious appearance. The smooth and soft appearance even resembles satin. If we look at the quality, you can place percale on top of both cotton and satin. And that for a relatively low price.
Cotton renforce - reinforced cotton
Cotton renforcé is, just like percale, made of 100% cotton and is distinguished by the special way of weaving. Renforcé is woven with a plain weave and is therefore stronger than normal cotton. This is how Renforcé also gets its name, because this is the French word for 'reinforce'. A renforcé duvet cover often has a somewhat tougher look than percale.
Polyester cotton/polycotton/cotton blend – the best of both
A mixed duvet cover is (in most cases) a combination of polyester and cotton. The cotton fibers are interwoven with polyester threads. By combining the two materials, the best properties of both cotton and the synthetic fabric emerge. This creates a fabric that absorbs moisture well, breathes well, is virtually iron-free and retains its color well. Polycotton is also supple and feels cool and soft. The difference with a 100% cotton duvet cover is that mixed cotton is slightly smoother, but less slippery than, for example, microfiber that consists entirely of a synthetic fabric.
Disadvantage: due to the synthetic influences, this fabric can feel a bit sweaty.
Linen – the sustainable choice
Linen is made from flax and is produced through a very intensive process with less water, no pesticides and minimal use of chemicals. As a result, linen has a slightly higher price tag, but it is an extremely strong and durable material. By itself, this fabric is a bit stiffer and rougher. The more you wash linen, the smoother it will become. Linen has the advantage that dust mites do not thrive on linen. This makes it very suitable for people with allergies. In addition, linen absorbs a lot of moisture without becoming damp itself. The material feels cool in summer and warm in winter and is 3x stronger than cotton.
Satin – for a luxurious look
When you think of satin, you immediately think of luxury. And that's right: satin is a beautiful, luxurious, smooth fabric that is also used for lingerie and bridal wear, for example. Satin can be made of synthetic or natural material. Whether or not the material can bear the name satin depends on the way it is weaved (for example, cotton is made from one weft thread and one warp thread and satin from four weft threads and one warp thread). With satin, the yarns are woven very close together. This ensures a very fine quality and a beautiful shine. This also makes the duvet cover feel smoother and softer. Satin is breathable and cool in summer and warm in winter. Ideal!
Extra advantage: satin is good for skin and hair. For example, satin extracts less moisture so that your skin and hair remain soft and hair does not fluff.
Flannel – for the chilly
Are you a cold color? Then choose a flannel duvet cover. The material provides excellent warmth and has the ability to adapt to your body temperature. In addition, it feels wonderfully soft. The basic fibers of flannel often consist of wool or cotton, but can also be made of synthetic material. Or a combination. As for the quality, the more threads used, the finer the material.
Microfiber - nice and light and wonderfully soft
Microfiber is a combination of polyamide and polyester, both synthetic fabrics. Polyamide is the most form-retaining of all textile fibers (even when wet) and extremely elastic. Thanks to the curvature of the fibre, polyester has good resilience and is very light. That makes a microfiber duvet cover nice and light in weight. In addition, it feels wonderfully soft, is non-iron, does not shrink and dries quickly. The material is moisture-regulating, but absorbs less moisture than cotton, which means that it can feel a bit sweaty.
